Freeware - System Utilities - UNIX - Linux

SLAX 5.0
SLAX is a small, bootable, Linux operating system that runs Linux directly from a CD (or USB) without installing it. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses the Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing the read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory. Imagine the ability to boot your favorite Linux distribution whether you are at home, at school, or at work. Imagine walking on the street and carrying the only thing you needed in life - the 8cm compact disk with your Live Linux CD!
R-Linux 1.0
R-Linux is a free file recovery utility for the Ext2FS file system used in the Linux OS and several Unixes. R-Linux uses InteligentScan technology and flexible parameter settings that give you real control over the fastest data recovery ever seen. It recovers files from existing logical disks even when file records are lost. However, there are no network capabilities or ability to reconstruct damaged RAIDs or stripe sets in R-Linux.
Puppy Linux 0.9.9
Puppy Linux is a Linux distro with a number of interesting design requirements, it is designed so small that it can be loaded completely into RAM and run from there, including a large number of applications (you should have at least 128MB RAM). You can boot it from a live CD, and once booted up, the CD drive can be used for other purposes. Running completely from RAM means that response is very quick. Alternatively, Puppy Linux can be installed to, and booted from USB Flash drives or Zip drives. The basic version occupies about 50MB on a live CD or a USB Flash drive and includes various word processing, graphics, multimedia, network, database, file management, and system applications.
GTK+ 2.5
GTK+, which stands for the GIMP Toolkit, is a library for creating graphical user interfaces for the X Window System. It is designed to be small, efficient, and flexible. GTK+ is written in C with a very object-oriented approach. Language bindings exist for C++, Perl, Python, Objective C, Guile, and TOM.
GNOME 2.8
GNOME stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment. The GNOME project intends to build a complete, user-friendly desktop based entirely on free software. The desktop will consist of small utilities and larger applications which share a consistent look and feel.
FreeBSD
FreeBSD is an advanced BSD UNIX operating system for PC-compatible computers. FreeBSD offers advanced networking, performance, security and compatibility features today which are still missing in other operating systems, even some of the best commercial ones. FreeBSD makes an ideal Internet or Intranet server. It provides robust network services, even under the heaviest of loads, and uses memory efficiently to maintain good response times for hundreds, or even thousands, of simultaneous user processes. On the download page you will also find utility and application software that has been ported to FreeBSD.
Linux
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Linux is an independent POSIX implementation and includes true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, proper memory management, TCP/IP networking, and other features consistent with Unix-type systems. Developed under the GNU General Public License, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.
Debian
Debian is a free, or Open Source, operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the computer, does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs. Debian uses the Linux kernel, a free piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by (probably over 1000) programmers worldwide. A large part of the basic tools that fill out the operating system come from GNU, which are also free. Of course, the thing that people want is software; tools to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Debian comes with over 1500 packages (precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) -- all of it free.
GNU Queue 1.40.1
GNU Queue is a load-balancing system that lets users control their remote jobs in an intuitive, transparent and nearly seamless way. This is done with local shell job control and signaling and with Queue's innovative proxy deamon mechanism. Queue can be used as a local replacement for rsh to hosts within a homogeneous cluster under single administrative control. Queue also supports the more traditional email-based load-balancing and distributed batch-processing facilities using a number of criteria to decide where to send jobs.
Superkill 1.16
Superkill terminates one or more processes with the same name or specified PID.. Tested in the following systems: Linux 2.2.5.15, AIX 4.3, IRIX 6.3, HP-UX B.10.20 and SunOS 5.6.
